General

What is MovieHatch?
MovieHatch is a website that helps facilitate the filmmaking process by offering pitching tips & advice, online competitions, crowdfunding and marketing/PR for film related projects.
What is MovieHatch CrowdFunding?
MovieHatch crowdfunding allows filmmakers to collect financial contributions from others to assist in their production.  MovieHatch will help market and publicize the projects.  Our program has a twist from other crowdfunding sites in that we offer the opportunity for the projects to be shared with our prestigious NY and Hollywood partners and judges.
How does MovieHatch CrowdFunding work?
It's free to submit a project!  You simply log in to your profile and are asked a series of questions about the project. This information consists of the pitch that will appear on the site.  You will announce the project to your friends, family and colleagues and MovieHatch will continue to promote the feature on the site to it's huge database of members and to the public at large.  More information can be found on our Tips & Advice pages...
How is MovieHatch different from Kickstarter or IndieGoGo?
MovieHatch provides all the funding support you receive.  No requirement for meeting a goal!  We offer a very unique program that really explains the difference.  Our Audience Voting Program allows visitors to the site to express their appreciation of your project by rating it.  The top 3 rated projects each month will be shared directly with our judges and partners.  So, if you're trying to break into Hollywood, MovieHatch is giving you yet another opportunity.  Specific guidelines apply and you must raise at least $10K to qualify.
Who can use MovieHatch CrowdFunding?
Anyone 18 years or older.
How much does it cost to submit a project?
It's free!  We take a commission depending on how much you receive but the submission process is totally free!
Is there a minimum or maximum that I have to raise?
There is no minimum or maximum but you should be realistic and not expect to raise millions.  The minimum can be anything you choose but we recommend at least $500.
Who owns my project?
You own 100% of the project.
What do I need in order to submit a project?
Please see our Tips & Advice section for all elements needed in the submission process.
How do I get started?
You begin by registering on the site (upper right hand corner).  The process begins on the Submit tab on your profile page.
Do people that contribute have any equity in my project?
No!  This is absolutely against our policies and is illegal.  No one can offer any form of financial benefit from a contribution made through MovieHatch's site.

Audience Voting Program

What is the Audience Voting Program?
The Audience Voting Program allows you the opportunity to gain exposure to our partners/judges - key players in the Hollywood industry of both NY and LA.
How does the Audience Voting Program work?
At the end of each month, we will highlight 3 of the funding projects in an e-mail that goes directly to all of our judges/partners - past and present.

Do I have to participate in the Audience Voting Program?
The participation in this program is 100% optional.  But you must decide when submitting your project.  You can't come back later to change your mind.
How does the Audience Voting Program help me get exposure in Hollywood?
We let members and visitors to the site vote each month. The 3 projects with the highest rating are highlighted in an email to our judges and partners in NY and LA.  We will only show 3 at the most so the exposure if very specific.  If no one else meets the criteria (goal reached of at least $10,000 within the time frame), it may become a dedicated email!
Why would I want my project shared with people in Hollywood?
People in Hollywood can help you on many fronts - raising the remainder of the funds, finding talent attachments, distribution options and so much more.  It's up to you though.  This may not be your thing... it just depends on what you're trying to do with your specific project.
Do the MovieHatch partners or judges take control of my project if I participate?
Our partners and judges want to get involved in a variety of ways - from a range of just lending their name all the way to complete  involvement. The details are totally up to you and them.  The ultimate choice is yours.
How do I sign up for the Audience Voting Program?
You must select “yes” when asked if you want to participate (you are asked this during the submission process). Then, you will automatically be included in the voting program for the month after your deadline passes.

Creating a Project

Basics

What are eligibility requirements?
You must be 18 years old.
Is it U.S. based only?
No. We accept projects from outside the United States as well.  If you don't have a PayPal account, or access to one, there may be additional fees incurred for the transference of the financial contributions.
Who owns the rights to my project?
You will always own the full rights to your project, unless you choose to give them to someone else.  MovieHatch has no ownership by your submitting a project to our site for crowdfunding.
How do I protect my project?
You should always make sure you register your project with the WGA or the Copyright Office of the U.S. government...  You can find links on our Helpful Resources page.
Can I have more than 1 project at a time?
You can have as many project on the site as you wish at one time; however, we don't recommend that you put too many up at once.  Your friends and colleagues won't want to be inundated with requests from you for multiple projects.  It just limits your ability to achieve your full goal.
What are the funding goals and deadlines?
The goals are the amount of funding you need for your project.  Find more information on how to set a goal from our Tips & Advice section.  The deadline is the time period you are given to achieve that goal.  We allow between 1-60 days.
How can I make the donations tax deductible?
You can make your project tax deductible if you work through a fiscal sponsor.  If you have a fiscal sponsor, please let us know.  We need to ensure that your payment processing is handled through that fiscal sponsor and not directly with you.
Where can I find advice and tips on creating my project?
We have created an entire section of our site to help you as you prepare for creating your project.  It's our Tips & Advice section and it's best to begin with our page on Guidelines.  All other sections are linked from there.
Can I delete my project?
You are not allowed to delete your project once it has been posted on the site and has begun to attract financial contributions.  If you find that you are not able to complete the project for some reason, you must notify us immediately. Depending on the circumstances, you may be required to refund all financial contributions plus any fees.  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY AND ABLE TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT PRIOR TO SUBMITTING IT. If you simply abandon your project, you may be subject to legal action taken by the contributors.

Pitch Elements

What are the main elements I need to prepare for submitting my project?
You need a logline, synopsis, written pitch, images and a video.  You can learn more in our Tips & Advice section.
Where can I get help or advice on creating those elements?
Our Tips & Advice section gives you information to get started on each element.
Why do I need to offer rewards?
You want to express appreciation for financial contribution and the best way to do this is to offer rewards.
What kind of rewards can I offer?
You can offer anything you like - from tweets, to thank you letters to walk-on roles in your film.  Be creative BUT make sure you can deliver what you offer.
How do I decide the rewards?
Thinks about what your project might offer and what you know you can deliver.  Think about what you might like to receive in appreciation of financial support...
Can I have a limited quantity of a reward?
Absolutely!  Some rewards are one of a kind.
Is anything prohibited?
There can be no financial reward of any sort.  We also recommend against questionable items such as alcohol.
Why is a video necessary?
A video creates more impact and allows you to tell your story.  Not everyone wants to read about a project - sometimes it's just easier to watch a short video.
What are the technical requirements for the materials?
We have a page that tells you the specifics - you can learn more about it on technical requirements.
Does the subject of my project matter?
No.  As long as it adheres to our Rules.
What if something changes on my project?
We have an 'updates' section on every project.  We urge you to constantly provide updates - several times a week if possible.  Contributors want information and potential contributors want the newest information.

Contributions

How much can I contribute to a project?
As much as you want!
Can I contribute to more than one project?
Absolutely.  We hope that you do.
Is my contribution tax deductible?
If the project is affiliated with a fiscal sponsor, it is.  They should note this in their pitch.
Do I get equity for my contribution?
No!  This is expressly against our Rules and against the law.
Do I get any financial payback for my contribution?
No!  Again, this is expressly against our Rules and against the law.
What do I get in return for my contribution?
The project team has listed appreciation rewards for your contribution.  Depending on the amount you contribute, you are given the items they've listed on the project page.
Who is responsible for getting my reward to me?
This is solely between the project manager and the contributors.
What happens if I don't get my reward?
The project manager is required to contact you after the deadline for their project; therefore, you will have their direct contact details.  If you do not hear from them, please contact us on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we'll do our best to help resolve the situation.  However, it is not MovieHatch's responsibility to manage the distribution of rewards...
What is the process for contributing?
It's quite simple.  You find the project you wish to support, select the amount you wish to contribute, register on the MovieHatch site and then pay via PayPal.  You do not need a PayPal account.
Do I need a PayPal account to contribute?
No.  PayPal also accepts credit cards.
Are contributions refundable if I change my mind?
No.  All contributions are final.
Where does the money go if the goal is not reached?
The project manager is required to outline the use of the funding.  This should be listed on their project page.  If the full amount is not raised, you should still be able to see where the money will be spent.

Money:  Fees and Contributions and Goals

What fees are charged by MovieHatch?
It's free to submit.  MovieHatch takes a small commission on the actual amount you raise. If you reach your goal, it's 4%. If you reach at least 50% of your goal, it's 6%. If you raise less than 50%, it's 8%. In addition, PayPal takes a small processing fee (just under 3%).
Are there any other fees?
The question above includes all fees charged to submit for a crowd funding project.
What does it cost to submit a project?
 it's totally free to submit.
How do I set my goal amount?
This depends on what you need for your project and the tasks you want to complete. You should cost this out head of time.
Is there a maximum I can raise?
 No. There is no maximum.
What if I reach my goal before the deadline?
You can continue to raise funds until the deadline, even if that goes beyond your initial goal.
What if I don't reach my goal by the deadline?
You still receive all the contributions raised by your deadline date. You must use this to work towards the project you have outlined. Make sure you understand all the Rules of accepting financial contributions ahead of time.
How does MovieHatch send me the contributions received for my project?
You will automatically receive 92% of each contribution (minus the PayPal processing fees) the instant somebody contributes to your project. Any were maiming funds due to you will be sent within a week of your deadline date.
What if I don't want to use PayPal to receive the contributions?
Right now, PayPal is our processing procedure for accepting financial contributions. If you are based outside the United States or cannot get a PayPal account, contact us and we'll make other arrangements but there may be an incremental charge.
How quickly do I receive the contributions?
You immediately receive the contributions, but only 92% of them (minus PayPal processing fees) as this assumes the highest commission rate for us. If you reach your goal, or at least 50% of it, we will send you the remaining amounts owed a week after your deadline date.
How do I know the details of the contributions?
We will automatically send you an e-mail upon your project receiving a contribution. We also send you a summary after your deadline date. This will include the amounts, the contributor and their contact details.
What do I do with the contributions if I can't complete my project?
If you cannot complete your project with the contributions you have an option of refunding all the contributions in full, or beginning the project and seeking alternative options for raising the remaining amount needed (including posting another project on the  MovieHatch site).
Can I contribute to my own project?
 yes.
What is a fiscal sponsor?
A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit organization that has accepted your project for managing financial contributions. If you have a fiscal sponsor, please let us know as soon as possible.
Why does a fiscal sponsor help?
A fiscal sponsor helps because all funding that is channeled through that sponsor is considered a tax deduction for the contributor.
How do I make the contributions tax deductible?
You must have a fiscal sponsor to make the contributions tax-deductible. There are many fiscal sponsors available and each have their own application process.

Communicating with Contributors

How do I know who contributed to my project?

How do I reach the people that contributed to my project?
The e-mails that you receive with the contribution amounts will give you contact details, including e-mail addresses.
What is a Project Update?
A project update is any news or advancements you've made on your project. Just think of it as a mini blog or newsflash of interest, or other important information.
How does a Project Update communicate with my donors?
