An ancient vampire frames his young protégé for murders in order to make the emerging artist an indentured tutor in his estate.
Fade in as a lover paints a nude portrait of the ex-girlfriend of protagonist- BRIAN ELLSWORTH, before the painter is disemboweled the same night Brian flies to Paris, recipient of a patronage to the Sorbonne provided by the venerable ADAM PRIMERA. Brian is liberated from his oppressive father who only supports study of medical arts.
Uberfather Adam flatters Brian as the next emerging master. Serial murders committed with artistic panache and medical expertise follows Brian and he is the obvious if circumstantial suspect. Brian is also followed by malevolent, resentful artists.
Brian’s time at the Sorbonne painting and finding romance ends as he’s pursued by French and American authorities- the superstitious, French constable, “JAX” reluctantly partnered with the gruff American- GIL WILLIS. Before being extradited or jailed, Primera’s attorney spirits Brian away to sanctuary – to paint in the eccentric elder’s estate.
Brian learns his patron isn’t just eccentric. Adam talks of study under daVinci and implies he’s ageless. A sarcastic Brian asks Adam about vampires- only a wooden stake or will bullets work? Adam wryly replies half truths of legends have served vampires’ self preservation. Brian confronts Adam who reveals his gruesome, vampire’s face to the young artist who just escapes alive.
Brian finds sanctuary at the Cathedral de Notre Dame, weary and soaked from the river Seine. Brian’s confession is received by a priest who lends Brian a gift.
Outside the cathedral Adam confronts Brian as Willis and Jax close in. Harsh are followed by violence. Gill pulls a gun; Adam decapitates Gil as Brian tries the priest’s gift about which Adam says – a crucifix "only works if you believe."
Adam separates Brian from the cross and moves in to kill until Jax burns the crucifix into Adam’s face. Jax believes! Brian empties Gill’s gun into Adam until he is blasted into the river. Brian and Jax peer in after; is lore of running water killing vampires true?
