After the disappearance of her nephew, a woman becomes obsessed with finding the truth even as it exposes the possible complicity of her brother.
As children, KATIE (34) and JOEY’s (31) parents were killed and they were placed in separate foster homes - Katie into a loving family, Joey suffering at the hands of an abusive foster father.
Years later, Katie and Joey’s world is turned upside down when ANDREW (8) Joey’s son, goes missing. Joey admits he left the boy alone and is immediately the prime suspect. Two detectives are on the case: MICHAEL (26) an aggressive cop who sees everything in black and white, and HIROTO (34) methodical and stoic. Both the detectives struggle with family dynamics that affect their perspectives. Although there is no hard evidence to connect Joey with Andrew’s disappearance, once suspicious and circumstantial facts come out, the detectives arrest him.
Each character is forced to re-examine what they thought was true, and the detective’s personal lives begin to encroach on the case.
Katie remains Joey’s strongest defendant and is obsessed with finding Andrew’s killer. She breaks into a convicted child molester’s house to gain evidence and has a chilling confrontation. As her personal world crumbles around her, she must choose to save her marriage, or continue to be tethered to the sinking ship named Joey. She lets go of everything she has been holding on to: her guilt about Joey’s childhood, her career ambition and the hopes of finding Andrew alive.
The jury finds Joey not guilty and he arrives home to find that Katie and her husband have moved. Joey feels Katie has abandoned him again. He confronts her and childhood secrets are revealed. In an unexpected turn, Joey is revealed as Andrew’s killer. In the icy waters where the crime took place, an action sequence unfolds where he attacks Katie she is forced to shoot him. The dark water is the place for his pre-death confession and the first moment where Katie is no longer her brother’s keeper.
