Following his heroic father's untimely death, an aimless boy consigned to military school finds inspiration when his father's wartime journal sparks his ascension into manhood.
The year is 1945. Six-year-old Hugh’s father Doc returns from war. Unfortunately, between Doc’s affairs and Hugh’s mother Lucille’s drinking, Hugh is deeply wounded when his parents divorce. Hugh resents Lucille and idolizes Doc. When Doc miraculously delivers a baby with a jackknife, Hugh thinks he can never be like his heroic father, but Hugh is devastated when Doc dies in a plane crash.
Lucille ships her troubled son off to military school. Bullied and miserable, Hugh discovers inspiration in Doc’s wartime journal, standing up to the bully and improving in school . . . until Lucille tells Hugh that military school was Doc’s idea.
Angry and bitter, sixteen-year-old Hugh runs away to find new courage, facing racial prejudice and his own self-doubt when he bravely delivers a young black woman’s baby. Confident at last, Hugh graduates with honors and receives a final message of inspiration from Doc.
