One woman’s war with a U-boat, but a secret will even the odds.
The German Navy calls it “Operation Drumbeat”. The target: American shipping off the U-S coastline.
A Florida town called Jupiter becomes an unlikely setting for one of the first battles of WWII.
JUNO IRENE BACH (“JIB” to her friends) is a beautiful woman in her 20’s who, with her DADDY and brother NED, work the family fishing trawler “Jupiter’s Girl”.
JIB is tough, profane and earthy; traits learned by being the only woman working the water. Her boyfriend JOE PIERCE is in love with JIB, but she intimidates him.
A U-boat first attacks an oil tanker. “Jupiter’s Girl” races to sea to pick-up survivors, but there aren’t any … the Germans have killed them all.
Days later there’s another U-boat attack. This time there are survivors, but as “Jupiter’s Girl” picks them up, the sub attacks the trawler. JIB is wounded.
The town demands action from the Coast Guard. Spread thin, the Coast Guard agrees to supply fishing boats with depth charges and a day of training. After a near-disaster, the depth charges are confiscated except for one, accidentally left behind.
The next night the sub sinks a cargo ship.
Unarmed, no one will help. Only “Jupiter’s Girl” goes to sea. The surfaced U-boat is waiting. When the trawler gets within range, the Germans strike. Daddy and Ned die, but JIB survives.
She vows to sink the U-boat.
JIB has a plan, but she needs help to spring the trap. She cajoles another captain, HARLON SWISHER, to recruit three other boats. They train.
After another merchant ship is hit, the small fleet goes to sea. The U-boat lurks.
JIB’s attack plan quickly falls apart, but JIB is able to bring “Jupiter’s Girl” close enough to damage the U-boat. Swisher attacks with the depth charge. The sub is sunk.
JIB celebrates , then another U-boat surfaces. With nothing left to fight with, JIB and the others await death.
The second U-boat captain has another idea.
He offers the Americans a deal.
