She's Fierce. She's Frightening. She's Fearsome. She's also your Fairy Godmother.
The Goodmother Cookies is a modern, adult themed retelling of the Cinderella story. It is set on a council estate in South London.
Julie Burrows is a shy, introverted young woman who was dragged up by her lazy, foul mouthed, welfare cheating parents to wait on them hand and foot.
They treat her like the drudge she allows herself to be. She holds down a part-time job in a local cut-price convienience store.
Lacking in any self confidence and of any hope of a life for herself, Julie retreats into a world where she is world famous opera star. A beautiful diva who is loved by all who hear her sing. She longs to be loved by someone but love is for others. Or is it?
Brian Johnson is a talented artist with a great career ahead of him. After helping his sister in buying her first home, he accidently kills her husband in a car accident. Brian is left disabled and wracked by guilt, he gives up all hope of becoming a professional artist and instead takes a job in a call centre and moves in with his sister and her young son to help them financially.
Enter the Fairy Godmother. An-Gel Goodmother is a potty mouthed, bad tempered African American with an attitude problem. She hates her job. She hates her boss, but she has a job to do and with some help from a magical box of Fortune Cookies she achieves the seemingly impossible. Like in all good fairy tales, the goodies win, the baddies lose and love conquers everything.
NOTES: I've taken quite a few liberties with this story. Cinders is not some lovely young lady who suddenly becomes a Princess overnight. I've made her a normal young woman who, with a some make-up, the right clothes and with a bit of self-confidence and luck thrown in, can achieve anything she wants to. Prince Charming is just an average looking decent guy who can paint and happens to be disabled. There is no evil step-mother, no mice and no coach. And there are no glass slippers either. Health & Safety would take a very dim view.
