An English vampire must brave the LA sun to stop a serial killer with a thirst for immortality.
BYRON CAULFIELD has vowed never to fall in love again. He is in fact still trying to forget the woman who broke his heart two hundred years before.
Byron is a vampire and, rather unusually, a vegetarian. Not because of any moral objection to feasting on humans but because he is tired of life, and the lifespan of each animal he feeds on is added to his own.
Byron is visited by a fellow vampire who informs him of the disappearance of his friend and mentor HENRY TENBRIDGE whilst visiting Los Angeles. Not in itself a major catastrophe but a body has been found drained of blood in the vicinity of where Henry was last seen.
Byron, being in possession of a mind of some repute, is sent to investigate, and so Jet-lagged and smothered in Factor 1000 sunscreen lotion, he arrives in LA. Immediately on arrival he hears of the discovery of another murder victim, this one burnt to a crisp.
Posing as a bereaved relative, Byron visits the LAPD morgue where the bodies are being kept. Here he encounters beautiful and up-beat Pathologist DEBBY JUKES, and angry, hard-boiled detective FRANK O'REILLY. The burnt corpse turns out to be Henry.
Byron manages to get a date with Debby and attempts to find out what he can about the investigation into Henry's death. Debby is a positive and warm person, but despite this Byron finds himself attracted to her.
More bodies are found, drained of blood and baring Satanic symbols carved into their skin. Byron investigates some of the shadier LA night spots and soon picks up a trail of a serial killer with a vampire fixation. But also manages to establish himself as a suspect in the eyes of Detective O'Reilly.
Can he survive the scorching sunshine of Los Angeles? Can he survive the attentions of O'Reilly AND the vampire killer?
And most importantly of all, can he stop himself falling in love again?
